I’ve acquired and transfered many domains over the last 15 years, both to and from my accounts. The process is mostly straightforward, though it is a little backwards in that usually the recipient makes the request and then the gifter acknowledges it:
0. The recipient requests the domain transfer within the new registrar’s account - this will trigger an email to the listed admin contact of the domain to approve the transfer, so if you’re getting the domains from someone who is completely non-technical (as must be the case if they used googleapps in the first place), you’ll want to do the following FIRST so that you’re the admin contact. And, to make it even more fun, you’ll have to do this separately for each domain name.
1. Log into googleapps for the domain (you’ll need the original owner to give you the credentials for this, since they surely will have no clue about what to do next). 2. find the domain settings section 3. copy the enom pwd 4. log into enom 5. change the contact info 6. email googleapps at enom the enom pwd and beg for the authorization key 7. wait
Once you get the attention of an enom-google “customer service” rep, you’ll get an email with a long key, usually after about 5 hours. This is plenty of time to initiate the request with your registrar.
Now, take that notification that the your registrar sent you (as the domain’s old admin contact), and log into your account. Find the pending transfers section, and proceed to “Authorize” the transfer. You’ll need the transaction id & password that the new registrar sent, and then the authorization key that enom/google sent you.
Now you’re told to wait another 5 days… That’s where I’m at with 3 of the 12 domains. I’ll be repeating this process for the other 9 today.
